Pool Skimmer Replacement and Repair in Killeen, Texas
Killeen Pool Resurfacing provides pool skimmer replacement and repair in Killeen, Texas: worn weirs and baskets, cracked covers, leaking skimmer bodies and the plumbing ports behind them.
A skimmer is built into the pool at the waterline. Custom Molded Products (CMP), a skimmer maker, wraps one formed into a concrete pool in no less than 4 inches of structural concrete placed in a single monolithic pour, with tie points to the pool's rebar cage, and its collar rises to meet the deck. Work on the edge around the pool is covered under pool coping replacement. At a free estimate we'll check the body, the weir, the cover and the ports, and talk through repair or replacement.

Parts of an in-ground pool skimmer
CMP describes a typical in-ground skimmer as a body, a collar and cover at deck level, a weir door, a float valve on some models and a debris basket. The deck ring collar is a friction fit that slides up or down, and extension collars can be stacked to bring it to the deck's height. Two 2-inch ports carry the plumbing: the rear one connects to the pool suction, and the front one may serve as an equalizer line or connect to the main drain, or is plugged if it isn't used.
Signs a skimmer needs repair or replacement
CMP's maintenance list is short: check the weir now and then for free movement and replace it if it is damaged or worn, and empty the strainer basket as needed. Its warnings mark where repair ends: don't use a cracked or damaged skimmer, and don't step on a cracked skimmer plate. Overtightening the threaded plugs in the ports can crack the plug or the skimmer body itself, and CMP wants the pipes supported on undisturbed earth and not lifted or moved once they are connected, so they don't stress the ports.
Skimmers leak, too. National averages reported in 2025 name skimmers among the places inground pool leaks most often occur, and the EPA's own list includes the pool-to-pipe connection. A pool that keeps losing water is a case for pool leak detection, and a crack in the shell itself is covered under pool crack repair.

Skimmer rules in the pool code
The skimmer rules here come from the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code; the City of Killeen has since adopted the 2024 edition. The 2021 code requires every permanent in-ground residential pool and spa to have either a surface skimming system or a perimeter overflow system, built to skim the surface whenever the water level is within its operating range. Where skimmers are the only overflow system, it calls for at least one for every 800 square feet of residential pool surface, every 500 square feet of public pool and every 150 square feet of spa, placed to keep the skimming effective; CMP's own manual says one per 500 square feet and tells installers to check the local building code.
The skimming system has to be designed for 100 percent of the circulation turnover rate, and a cleanable strainer, skimmer basket or screen must sit ahead of the pump or be part of it. With adjustable-weir skimmers, the code allows the design waterline a construction tolerance of plus or minus 1/4 inch at completion, and plus or minus 1/8 inch where the skimming system can't be adjusted.
Water bonding and permits for skimmer work
Bonding the pool water
Since 2008 the National Electrical Code has required the pool water itself to be electrically bonded, not just the metal in the pool's structure, CMP explains, and the water is usually bonded at the light. For pools with nicheless LED lights, CMP makes a water-bonded skimmer whose bonding device, at least 9 square inches of conductive material, stays in contact with the water at all times, even with the pump off; a copper wire at the back of the skimmer connects it to the pool's bonding grid or loop.
Permits in Killeen
Killeen's own permit rule covers installing, altering, repairing or replacing a plumbing system regulated by the building chapter, and the City's permit handout counts cutting into or installing plumbing pipes as permit work but not like-for-like fixture swaps; its examples are all household fixtures, with no mention of pool equipment. The pool code the City adopted also requires a permit to alter or repair a pool. Killeen Building Inspections can say whether a particular skimmer job needs one. Pools beyond the city line fall to Bell County, which issues no building permits there.

How much does it cost to replace a pool skimmer?
National averages reported in 2025 put skimmer replacement at $2,000 to $3,000, against $50 to $300 for a skimmer repair and $50 to $300 for a fitting or connection repair. Another national source, with no data year stated, says a full skimmer swap can run $1,200 or more when repair isn't an option. These are published figures, not our prices.
Can a leaking skimmer be repaired instead of replaced?
Often the leak is in a seal or fitting rather than the body. National averages with no data year stated put replacing a leaky seal at $100 to $130 and most skimmer fixes at $50 to $300, averaging $175. A cracked body is a different matter: CMP warns against using a cracked or damaged skimmer, and notes that overtightened plugs can crack the body itself.
Why is my pool skimmer sucking air?
Check the water level first. CMP wants it at least 2 inches above the bottom of the skimmer's mouth, and on models with a float valve, the valve closes the skimmer when the water drops below the mouth or the basket clogs, so the pump doesn't run dry. If the level is right and air or dirt still blows out of the return jets, Anderson Manufacturing, a leak-detection equipment maker, says air may be getting pulled into the plumbing through a leak.
Are skimmer equalizer lines dangerous?
They can be, which is why the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code prohibits equalizers on skimmers and requires skimming devices not to create a hazard. CMP prints a danger notice in its manual: seal the equalizer line with a plug set in NSF-listed PVC cement, because equalizer fittings can trap hair or body parts and cause severe injury or death. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's inspection checklist covers the drain covers on skimmer equalizer lines too, asking that covers be intact, with no loose or missing screws and no cracks, and recommending replacement once a cover passes the expiration date printed on it.
What are the skimmer rules for apartment and HOA pools?
Apartment, condominium and HOA pools count as public pools in Texas, and the State's public-pool rules require the water level to stay within the operating range of the rim, gutter or skimmer system; when it drops below that range, the pool must close. The CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code, a model rather than Texas law, keeps public-pool water near the middle of the skimmer openings, requires weirs to stay in place and working at all times, and has broken or missing weirs replaced immediately. The 2021 code's skimmer count for public pools is one per 500 square feet.
