Residential Pool Resurfacing in South Mountain, Texas
Killeen Pool Resurfacing handles residential pool resurfacing in South Mountain, Texas, the small Coryell County town north of U.S. Highway 84, about three miles east of Gatesville. On a home pool, some spots wear harder than others: Universal White Cement, a white cement maker, says salt systems, heaters and spillways all create localized zones of higher stress on plaster, and that poor circulation or adding chemicals in one spot can shorten its life there.
The Census Bureau's estimate for South Mountain on July 1, 2025 is 409 residents, about level with its 2020 base of 407. A free estimate looks at the pool and, where there is one, the spa beside it.

Homes in the Census
South Mountain had 411 residents and 185 housing units in the 2020 Census; 163 of the units were occupied and 22 stood vacant. From the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey: housing built at a median of 1984, owners in 109 of 142 occupied homes (76.8%), a median home value of $162,500, a median household income of $57,500, and not one home in a building of five or more units.
A pool with a spa
The National Plasterers Council points out that pool and spa finishes, unlike other masonry, sit underwater all the time in water treated with powerful chemicals, so the minerals in the surface and in the water are always interacting. A spa built into the yard has rules of its own in the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code's 2021 edition: one chapter governs the design, installation, construction and repair of permanently installed residential spas, and it sends them to the code's spa chapter as well, minus a few sections written for public spas. Where surface skimmers are the only overflow system, that edition asks for at least one skimmer for every 150 square feet of spa surface, against one per 800 square feet for a residential pool.

Coryell County, which surrounds the town, covers 1,031 square miles of plateaus and grasslands in the Grand Prairie region, at elevations from 600 to 1,493 feet. The Leon River and Cowhouse Creek are its two principal streams, and its soils are mostly alkaline with limestone underneath. The county's growing season averages 244 days a year, and its rainfall about thirty-two inches.
For the day the finish goes on, the National Plasterers Council's analysis of plastic shrinkage cracking points to wind more than heat: a 100°F day with little or no wind stays below the critical rate of water loss, but sustained wind above 5 mph pushes past it, and even a mild 75°F day can go over with sustained winds of 12 to 13 mph.

More pool work near South Mountain
Resurfacing is our main job here, and we handle the rest of a home pool as well: a quartz, pebble or glass bead finish, a replaster, fiberglass refinishing or pool paint, vinyl liner replacement, the tile line and coping, the deck, and cracked plaster, failing skimmers or leaks. Apartment, HOA and other commercial pools are on the list too.
Gatesville, the county seat three miles to the west, was founded soon after Coryell County was organized in 1854 and named for nearby Fort Gates; its page covers commercial and residential pool remodeling in Gatesville. Mound, settled in the early 1850s and one of the county's oldest communities, has its own page for pool replastering and plaster repair in Mound.
Steps in a residential resurfacing job
Look at the pool and the spa
At a free estimate we'll look at both surfaces, the fittings and the equipment, and talk through finishes for the pool and any attached spa.
Ask the town and the County
No South Mountain ordinance or permit page turned up in our research, and Coryell County's permitting list names no building or pool permit; ask the town's officials and the County before work is booked.
Check the spa outlet covers
The 2021 code calls for spa suction fittings listed and labeled to APSP 16, and says a spa must not be used or operated if its suction outlet cover is missing, damaged, broken or loose.
Turn the water over daily
The National Plasterers Council recommends turning all the pool water over once a day, with at least two thirds drawn from the main drain and about one third from the skimmers.
Add chemicals the careful way
The Council says to pre-dilute chemicals where possible and add them with the pumps running, in the deep end away from benches, steps and suction lines, then brush the area.
Track dissolved solids
The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance recommends monthly TDS tests for home pools and spas, sets the maximum at 1,500 ppm above the start-up reading, and says a spa should be drained completely once it is 1,500 ppm or more above the source water.

Get free estimatesSouth Mountain questions: rules and town status
Who sets the rules for pool work in South Mountain?
No town website, ordinance code or building-permit page for South Mountain turned up in our research, so the town's own rules, if it has any, aren't on record here. Texas law makes the May 1, 2019 version of the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code the state's municipal pool and spa code, and applies it to building, altering, remodeling and repairing pools in a municipality that chooses to regulate pools or spas; we found no record of whether South Mountain has made that choice. Coryell County's Development and Permitting Department, at 3701 U.S. Hwy 84 West in Gatesville, lists only "Subdivisions, Fence row clearing permit, Mailbox permits, Culvert/driveway permits, Utility-excavation," with no building or pool permit among them. Ask the town's officials and the County before a resurfacing starts, and Killeen Pool Resurfacing will plan around what they say.
Is South Mountain a separate town from Gatesville?
Yes. The Census Bureau's 2025 Gazetteer lists South Mountain as a town with an active government, not a census-designated place, lying wholly in Coryell County about 25.22 miles north of Killeen's center point. It lies north of U.S. Highway 84, three miles or so east of Gatesville, and the 2020 Census counted 411 people there.
