Gelcoat Fiberglass Pool Resurfacing in McGregor, Texas
Killeen Pool Resurfacing offers gelcoat fiberglass pool resurfacing in McGregor, Texas, first known as McGregor Springs, sixteen miles southwest of Waco on U.S. Highway 84. The gelcoat is a fiberglass pool's smooth, glossy face, the part you see, touch and walk on; River Pools, which builds fiberglass pools, describes it as a colored resin sprayed onto the shell during manufacturing.
The Census Bureau estimates McGregor at 6,405 residents on July 1, 2025, up from 5,321 at the 2020 Census. From Launch Pad Park to Amsler Park, a free estimate covers the condition of the gelcoat, the ways to refinish it and what the City's permit form asks for.

When McGregor's gelcoat needs attention
A median home from 1979
McGregor had 2,034 housing units at the 2020 Census, 1,873 occupied and 161 vacant. Its median home dates to 1979 in the 2020–2024 American Community Survey. Of 2,043 occupied homes, 1,401 are owner-occupied (68.6%); the median home value is $221,700, the median household income $72,750, and 7.7% of homes stand in buildings of five or more units.
What wears gelcoat down
In most cases, River Pools says, a fiberglass pool never has to be resurfaced; it is when the water chemistry is neglected or the surface goes uncleaned that the gelcoat wears down and eventually needs repair or replacement. Whether a whole pool can be given new gelcoat in the ground is disputed: River Pools says that isn't practical, while at least one gelcoat seller shows customers' pools resurfaced with its product. Coatings, epoxy paint and gelcoat repair for a worn shell are compared on our fiberglass pool resurfacing page.

An osmotic blister, in River Pools' account, starts with water working its way through the gelcoat. Inside, the water meets contaminants and combines into a larger molecule that can't get back out by the route it came in, and the outward force lifts the gelcoat into a blister, parting it from the laminate layer underneath. Barrier Reef Pools, another maker, blames the protective surface wearing away under chemical imbalance, after which contaminated water seeps in and leaves dozens, even hundreds, of tiny air pockets. River Pools stresses that these blisters are cosmetic and don't touch the structure.
Color tells Tallman Pools what a stain is. Berries, dirt, pollen and algae leave organic blemishes in green, brown or tan. Metals leave their own colors: brown, black or purple from manganese, green, blue or teal from copper, and orange, brown or tan from iron. Spots that are black may be cobalt, which Tallman counts as a reaction rather than a true stain: water gets through the gelcoat, reacts with the resin under it and leaves a black byproduct. Killeen Pool Resurfacing will look at any blisters and spots on a McGregor shell at the free estimate.

Get free estimatesWhat a maker's gelcoat warranty covers
Blistering is where makers' gelcoat warranties concentrate. Latham's covers osmotic blistering caused by defects in materials or workmanship for the whole time the original retail buyer keeps the pool. Glimmerglass sets ten years against osmotic blistering, and Barrier Reef warrants its finish coat or gelcoat against blistering for 15 years in total.
Ordinary wear tends to fall outside. Latham lists fading, staining, discoloration, and cracking down to hairline cracks among its exclusions, osmotic blisters apart. Rainforest Pools' gelcoat terms leave out discolorations, staining, fading, hairline cracks, blistering, surface yellowing, cobalting and roughness that come from water chemistry or the gel coat's own material characteristics. These are the makers' terms, not ours; the original maker's warranty is worth reading before any refinish.
Bluebonnet water and gelcoat care
The City's water report
McGregor buys its water. The City's Consumer Confidence Report states that "CITY OF MCGREGOR is Purchased surface water," drawn from Bluebonnet Water Supply Corporation, whose source table lists it at Belton. For 2025 it reports disinfectant averaging 1.4, ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 against a limit of 4; the report gives no figure for hardness.
Cleaning that scratches gelcoat
Latham's care manual says steel wool, wire brushes, metal scrapers, other metal tools and abrasive cleaners will do permanent damage to a gel coat finish. Tallman Pools' list of what to keep off gelcoat puts scouring pads, pressure washers and household cleaners next to abrasive cleaners, warning of scratches, discoloration or other permanent harm.

Lots sold from a flatcar
McGregor was established in 1882 where the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe met the Texas and St. Louis railways, and was named for Dr. Gregor Carmichael McGregor, who gave the railroad its right-of-way across his land. On September 7, 1882, "a state land commissioner sold lots at auction from the back of a railroad flatcar." The town adopted a city charter in November 1886, counted 774 people in the 1890 census, and grew to 1,864 by 1910 and 2,081 by 1920 as "the commercial center and shipping point for much of western McLennan County."
The Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant
In 1942 the United States Army announced the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant on 18,000 acres just southwest of town, and McGregor's population tripled in three months to more than 6,000. After World War II the plant turned to peacetime industries, and in the 1950s part of it was converted to manufacturing rocket engines, solid propellants and gas generators.
Five public parks
The City lists five public parks, Amsler, Legacy, Bewley, Kasting and Launch Pad, with walking trails, baseball fields, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, playgrounds, a double 9 hole disc golf course, pavilions, soccer fields, fishing, a splash pad and a swimming pool. Launch Pad Park holds the McGregor Youth Baseball and Softball Association's three-field complex of Lechler, Ardell and Hackney Fields, and work on the Bewley Park tennis and pickleball courts was completed in February 2026.

Refinishing a McGregor fiberglass pool, step by step
Read the gelcoat
At a free estimate we'll look for blisters, black spots, metal stains, chalking and cracks, and ask who made the shell and when.
Check the warranty and the City
Find the maker's warranty terms before any work, and ask the City's Community Development office whether the job needs a permit.
Drain only with the maker's say-so
Tallman Pools says draining without its written authorization voids the warranty and can float or shift the pool, and has owners check the groundwater inspection port first and pump slowly.
Choose the refinish
For a shell already in the ground, River Pools' usual pick is a powder coating blown on with compressed air and set with heat, rather than fresh gelcoat.
Brush with soft nylon
Afterward, Tallman's routine is brushing the walls, steps, benches and waterline weekly, or more often as needed, with a soft nylon brush only.

Does McGregor require a permit for fiberglass pool work?
The City's form doesn't name pools. Its Permit Application, filed at 302 S. Madison Ave., won't be processed unless every field is filled in, and it offers just two job types, residential or commercial, with no line for a swimming pool; anything it doesn't list falls to a catch-all entry asking for detailed drawings or measurements as needed. The City's code of ordinances couldn't be read for this page, so ask the Community Development office whether refinishing a fiberglass pool needs a permit, and Killeen Pool Resurfacing will plan around the answer.
Is McGregor in McLennan County or Coryell County?
Both, on the map, but its people are counted in one. The Census Bureau's 2020 county-subdivision file shows the city spanning Coryell and McLennan counties, while its population estimates place all of McGregor's residents in McLennan County, with Coryell County's share at zero. McGregor is 29.81 miles northeast of Killeen's Census center point.
