What Sonterra MUD's water report shows

Groundwater and Lake Granger

The District's drinking water comes from groundwater in the Edwards North BFZ aquifer at Jarrell and from surface water supplied by the Brazos River Authority out of Lake Granger in Williamson County.

The 2025 mineral table

The 2025 report lists total hardness as calcium carbonate averaging 158.5 ppm (range 150 to 167), total alkalinity as calcium carbonate averaging 145.5 ppm (134 to 157), and total dissolved solids averaging 371 ppm (351 to 391). Calcium averaged 41.6 ppm and magnesium 13.2 ppm. The report's pH figure, 7.54 within a range of 7.5 to 7.6, comes from a 2021 reading.

Balancing new quartz plaster to the fill water

For a non-salt pool past its 28th day, the National Plasterers Council aims for calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm, carbonate alkalinity between 80 and 120, a pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and free chlorine between 1 and 3, with cyanuric acid held at 30 to 50 and dissolved solids anywhere from 300 up to 1,800 ppm. Carbonate alkalinity, in the Council's arithmetic, is the total alkalinity reading less a third of the cyanuric acid reading, and it is the only alkalinity that enters the saturation index.

The Council's window for that index, the Langelier Saturation Index, runs from 0.0 to +0.3 and matters most in the six months after start-up; it ties a negative index to leaching, etching or discoloration, and a positive one to mineral scaling, metal staining or discoloration. Past roughly 1,500 ppm of dissolved solids, it adds, trouble can begin, from cloudy water to a balance that's hard to keep. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance notes that every reading can sit in its ideal range while the water as a whole is still out of balance, as with 3,000 ppm of dissolved solids or water below 60°F. Killeen Pool Resurfacing will go through those numbers, and the finish maker's own start-up, at the free estimate.

Quartz plaster for homes built around 2015

A 2015 median year built

The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey dates the median Sonterra home to 2015 and puts the median home value at $273,600 and the median household income at $92,319. Of the occupied homes, 77.0% are owner-occupied, and 3.0% of its homes sit in structures with five or more units.

Curing, mottling and color

A quartz finish is still cement-based, and its cure carries on long after the fill. CL Industries says a cementitious finish takes up to a year to cure, so maintenance and operation stay critical for the first 10 to 12 months. The National Plasterers Council says "pigment masking", where white calcium deposits cover a colored finish, is most likely during the 3 days right after filling. Mottling is normal too, in the Council's view: a uniform shaded or cloudy look that comes from uneven moisture and hydration isn't a defect, calls for no fix, and usually fades or goes away with time. Colors, makers and exposure methods are set out on our quartz pool finishes page.

What quartz plaster costs

National averages reported in 2025 put quartz plastering at $7,000 to $10,000, or $7 to $10 per square foot, with colored quartz fragments mixed in to give the surface a speckled look. They are published figures, not our prices; a firm number follows a look at the pool.

A utility district instead of a city hall

Sonterra is a census-designated place, which the Census Bureau's place code flags as a statistical entity without a government, and CDPs get no yearly population estimate. It is an unincorporated subdivision, governed for utility purposes by the Sonterra Municipal Utility District. The District's Board of Directors meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at 113 Limestone Terrace in Jarrell, and Crossroads Utility Services, LLC operates its water system under contract. With no city government there's no zoning code and no City permit office, so ask Williamson County whether a resurfacing job needs anything from the county before work starts.

Other work we take on in Sonterra runs from white plaster replastering and pebble or glass bead finishes to fiberglass resurfacing, pool painting and vinyl liners, with waterline tile, coping, decks and crack, skimmer and leak repairs as well, for homes and for apartment, HOA and commercial pools.

Jarrell, which the Census Bureau estimated at 5,870 people on July 1, 2025, has a page on pebble pool surfaces in Jarrell. Bartlett, whose 1957 median year built makes its housing the oldest of the towns on this site, has one on pool renovation in Bartlett.

Steps in a quartz plaster resurface

  1. Look at the old surface

At a free estimate we'll check the old finish and talk through quartz colors and the start-up the chosen maker asks for.

  2. Ask the county, check the District

Ask Williamson County about permits, and check the District's current watering notice, since it sets when the pool can be refilled.

  3. Mix, apply and fill promptly

NPT says pool plaster starts hydrating as soon as it is mixed and 86 percent of the cement cures within the first 28 days, which is why prompt filling and a careful start-up matter.

  4. Pick the start-up method

The National Plasterers Council recommends its own start-up card but accepts that other procedures give similar good results, and says proprietary finishes should follow their maker's fill and start-up instructions. One alternative, the bicarb start-up, adds baking soda to the fill water before it reaches the pool; its promoters say it turns calcium hydroxide at the surface into durable calcium carbonate, so almost no plaster dust forms.

  5. Brush from the top down

NPT says to brush at least twice a day, from the top of the walls down, starting at the shallow end and finishing at the deep end.

  6. Keep feeders off for 28 days

Premix-Marbletite says chemical feeders other than ORP and pH controllers shouldn't run for at least 28 days after start-up, and that damage from premature or improper chemical use or feeders is the responsibility of the equipment installer and operator.

Questions on Sonterra's water rules

When can a pool be refilled under Sonterra MUD's watering notice?

The District's Stage 1 notice, effective Thursday, August 31, 2023, was issued because of high temperatures and excessive demand, and it asked for at least a 10% cut in demand. Under it, filling, refilling or adding water to a privately owned pool, wading pool or Jacuzzi-type pool is prohibited except during the designated watering hours, midnight to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight, on the customer's designated watering days, which are split by even and odd address numbers. Non-essential water use is prohibited outright. The District's link to its current restrictions shows no later notice, so ask the District which stage applies before a pool is drained.

What disinfectant does Sonterra MUD use?

Chloramines. The District's 2025 report gives an average of 1.81 ppm, within a range of 0.6 to 3.0 ppm, against a maximum residual level of 4.0. Total haloacetic acids averaged 17.68 and total trihalomethanes 46.85, both under their limits of 60 and 80. Killeen Pool Resurfacing can go over how the disinfectant fits the start-up at the free estimate.
